NEW THEME-April 2018 "Your Avatar"

Moving swiftly on to April....

There's a new film just out called Ready Player One (I've not seen it yet but have heard pretty good things about it). Here's the link to the trailer

So this months theme is.... "Your Avatar"
We want you to design your own avatar for visiting the 'Oasis' (like in the trailer). This can be characters that exist already, ones that you want to design yourself or even a mix of the two.

How would you get around as well (the guy in the film uses the car from 'Back to the Future') you could also create some transport if you wanted, again using pre-existing designs, your own or a mix. Let your mind run riot.

We look forward to seeing some more really exciting entries.

The Deadline for this will be Tuesday the 8th of May

Happy geeking!!

'If You're Out There'

This is a little looping animation I made in Harmony and comped in After Effects. I wanted to try a full rotation on something in Harmony, it's mad jittery, but it was fun all the same. The concept comes from a short film idea I've been working on called 'Time is a Gift' that I haven't really spent enough time working on, of course, of course.

Hope you guys like it anyway (Y)

Memories of the Space Age

I've been reading a lot of JG Ballard recently so I was inspired by the theme to do a mock up book cover for his short story collection Memories of the Space Age. Ballard is an interesting and challenging writer. He claimed to have more in common with a surrealist painter like DeChirico than a contemporary novelist, and "Ballardian" is given to mean "dystopian modernity, bleak man-made landscapes and the psychological effects of technological, social or environmental developments."
Although this may all seem a little grim, I'd encourage the viewer not to simply accept the most literal interpretation of this image. Although the subject may have befallen a catastrophe, the liberating possibilities of disaster are a central theme in Ballard's fiction. Perhaps our astronaut is simply dreaming of the gantries and runways of Cape Canaveral in the golden era of the Space Age, and will awaken to a new day, where its lost possibilities can be brought to fruition.

Thursday, 15 February 2018

Hi Boulder artbloggers,

Time to kickstart the Boulder artblog for the year, and in honour of the recent launch of The Falcon Heavy into deep space we thought we'd make the theme about that very thing: Space!

And like space itself the possibilities for creative exploration are vast. So we've broken it down into sub sections: Vehicles, Aliens, Robots, Planets. Pick one or as many as you like and let your imagination take you to "where no man has gone before!!" (yeah - you can also pay homage to your favourite sci-fi books, films, comics etc).

We'll run this one until the end of March after which we will all vote on the winner. The winner will receive a special prize.

Anyone new to the company who hasn't already joined the artblog, and would like to, give me a shout and we'll get you added to the account.

Happy doodlin'

Christmas Card Design

I thought I'd make the company itself into a character. I also like the idea of a big boulder golem being innocent and wanting to give gifts to the local wildlife despite its exterior

Some pretty hip gangsters..

Watch out.. they're spreading!

More thugs than gangsters - and they mostly got their arses whoopped - but..
The idea was far more elaborate.. I ran out of time too. I just hope most of the people recognize them!

This repentant gangster jumped to his death, rosary beads in hand. I was going to do a couple more shots for this scene to flesh out the story for this guy, but I ran out of time :P

Thank you for extending the deadline! I made this one yesterday during a 3 hours bus ride 🙂

Piotr Jabłoński

I was inspired by Piotr Jabłoński. The man is the art equivalent of the Terminator. Tireless, merciless, unstoppable. He uses de-saturated colour palettes with splashes of intense colour, and limits his value range to create some really subtle paintings.

I started this on Sunday evening. I don't know what the hell it is to be honest hahaha

But I hope it seems Jabłoński-ish.

Alphonse Marie Mucha

One hour ago I remembered that tomorrow is the deadline for this month's theme. Here's my very, very quick tribute to Mucha, the first artist that I have seen in my childhood. My mother painted on glass a copy of the painting that inspired this little drawing.

Ridley Scott

The visuals in his films are great but he's also a great drawer and does a lot of storyboard panels. I'm trying to capture the style of them here.

Rebecca and Steven Sugar

I've a lot of love for Rebecca Sugar, who built a wonderful show based on her brother, Steven! Said Steven is the lead background designer on the show, and his stuff is phenomenal! Super inspiring!
